ROCKFORD, Ill. – After three consecutive wins, the Rockford College women’s basketball team dropped their second straight game on Tuesday night at the Seaver Center. The Regents fell to Northern Athletics Conference South division leader Dominican University 79-68, dropping them to 3-5 overall, 2-2 in the NAC.
The game began as you would expect between two teams fighting for the division lead. Dominican had an impressive 6-1 record and the Regents had won three of its last four games. Both teams fought for control during the game’s opening 20 minutes, a half that featured seven ties. Both teams held slim leads but neither could fully grab the game’s momentum, with either team’s largest advantage being four points. At the break, the Stars held a 31-29 lead.
Early in the second half the Regents grabbed a six point lead, and it began to look like their defensive dedication and rebounding strength would give them the push they needed. It was just then that the Stars caught offensive fire, embarking on a 27-10 during which they 10-10 from the floor, including four three-pointers, and 3-3 from the free throw line. Rockford tried to mount a comeback, but Dominican sealed the game going 10-10 from the charity stripe in the game’s final minute.
Junior Britney Curry (Merrillville, Ind./ Merrillville) led three Regents in double-figure scoring with 18 points and grabbed nine rebounds. Senior Megan Lawler (Pearl City, Ill./ Pearl City) recorded another double-double with 15 points and 11 boards. Nicole Olson (Ottawa, Ill./ Serena) added 12 points off the bench.
The Regents will host the Wisconsin Lutheran College Warriors on Saturday at the Seaver Center. Tip-off is scheduled for 2:00 p.m.
