FOND DU LAC, Wis. – The Rockford College men’s basketball team improved their record to 4-3 and 2-0 in the Northern Athletics Conference with Saturday’s impressive 97-84 victory at Marian University.
Rockford had perhaps their most impressive first half in recent years, shooting 60% from the floor on 21-35 shooting. The Regents forced 14 first half Sabre turnovers, while committing just 5 of their own, leading to a 27-5 advantage in points off turnovers. Senior Robert Malone (Stephens, Ark./ Stephens) led three Regents in first half double-figure scoring with 17 points, en route to a 55-27 halftime lead.
Lucky for the Regents that they built such a large halftime lead since the tables turned after the break. Rockford connected on just nine field goals in the second half on 30% shooting, including 4-14 from beyond the three-point line. The Sabres shot 58.1% from the floor and connected on half of their three-pointers. Marian outscored Rockford 57-42 after the break.
Malone led five Regents in double-figure scoring with 28 points, nine rebounds, four steals, and three assists in the win. Freshman Clem Robinson (Milwaukee, Wis./ Nicolet) and senior Tyler Nauman (Hinckley, Ill./ Hinckley-Big Rock) combined for 29 points off the bench, including 5-8 from deep and 12-13 from the charity stripe. Senior Taylor Stinson (Schiller Park, Ill./ East Leyden), junior Paul Hall (Des Moines, Iowa/ Roosevelt), and freshman Tory Minnifield (Blue Island, Ill./ Eisenhower) added 12 points each.
Rockford will return to the friendly confines of the Seaver Center on Wednesday when they host the Dominican University Stars. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
