ROCKFORD, Ill. – It had been nearly six years since it happened last. Many had begun to think that it would never happen again. Unfortunately for the doubters, the determination and belief of 22 men are the only things that mattered. On Tuesday night, that determination and belief came to fruition. On Tuesday evening, in front of an excited crowd, the Rockford College men’s basketball team defeated the Aurora University Spartans 83-76. It was Rockford’s first win over Aurora since January 10, 2004.
The Spartans took an early lead, but a 10-4 run gave Rockford its first lead of the game, 17-16 just 10 minutes into the game. Five short minutes later, the Regents took control of the momentum and the scoreboard. With the score tied at 27 and 5:14 on the clock, Rockford embarked on a 10-0 run, with all five buckets coming on layups. The run was punctuated by a thunderous fast break dunk by senior Robert Malone (Stephens, Ark./ Stephens). At the break, the Regents held a commanding 40-31 lead.
As one would expect from the Spartans, they battled back after the halftime break. Several times early in the second half, Aurora managed to cut the Regents’ lead to two points, but each time, Rockford responded with a big basket or defensive stop. Aurora did tie the game at 49, but the Regents regained control of the game with a 19-7 run, including three huge three-pointers by Malone, freshman Clem Robinson (Milwaukee, Wis./ Nicolet), and senior Tyler Nauman (Hinckley, Ill./ Hinckley-Big Rock). Rockford connected for six of eight free throws to ice the game.
Malone led Rockford with his second 30 points, 13 rebound effort of the season, and added five assist while playing all 40 minutes. Freshmen Tory Minnifield (Blue Island, Ill./ Eisenhower) added 20 points, seven boards, and four steals. Robinson chipped in with 11 points and seven rebounds off the bench.
The Regents shot 47.7% from the floor, while holding the Spartans to a season-low 6-25 shooting from three-point range.
Rockford will travel to Fond du Lac, Wis. on Saturday, as they join the Regents ladies in a NAC doubleheader at Marian University. The ladies will open at 2:00 p.m., with the men to follow at 4:15 p.m.
