Alumnus Sunil Puri recognized for outstanding philanthropy

Sunil Puri ’82, is known for his charitable work in the community. Now, the community has acknowledged that good work. Puri received the Outstanding Philanthropist Award last month from the Rockford chapter of the Association of Fundraising Professionals (AFP).
Since arriving in Rockford in 1979 as a Rockford College student, Puri has been a force of change in myriad ways that benefit countless residents in need and the city as a whole.
Puri is the founder and president of First Rockford Group, a real estate development firm, is a Rockford College trustee, and serves on the board of the Rockford Area Venues and Entertainment Authority (RAVE).
The award recognizes his vision, leadership and philanthropy to numerous local causes, including Rockford College, Rockford Park District, Rock Valley College Starlight Theatre, United Way, Womanspace, YWCA of Rockford, the Rockford School District and the Keeling-Puri Peace Plaza.
"I am pleased to receive this award on behalf of my family,” Puri said while standing with his son, Chandan at an AFP awards luncheon. "It is an honor to be able to give back to the community that has given me so much.”
Puri was nominated by college president Robert L. Head.
