EUREKA, Ill. – The Rockford College men’s basketball team did not get off to the start they hoped in Tuesday’s loss at Clark College. But they seized their opportunity of Saturday as the Regents downed host Eureka College 76-73 for their first win of the season.
Though the score remained close throughout much of the first half, Rockford controlled the scoreboard, leading from the game’s opening minute. A 9-2 run late in the half pushed the Regents’ advantage to 38-26 at the halftime break.
After extending their lead to 18 points just three minutes into the second half, Eureka caught fire, embarking on a 27-7 run and taking a 54-52 lead with just over 11 minutes to play. The game remained close over the next few minutes, but an 8-2 run culminated by a three-pointer by freshman Tory Minnifield (Blue Island, Ill./ Eisenhower) gave Rockford a lead they would not relinquish. Over the game’s final five minutes, Rockford shot 4-6 from the field and 3-4 from the free throw line to seal the win.
Junior Robert Malone (Stephens, Ark./ Stephens) led three Regents in double figures with 24 points. Malone also recorded 13 boards and five steals. Minnifield added 14 points and junior Paul Hall (Des Moines, Iowa/ Roosevelt) tallied 11 points.
The Regents will continue on the road on Wednesday with a trip to Knox College in Galesburg, Ill. for a 5:00 p.m. game, before traveling to DePauw University in Greencastle, Ind. for the Mike Rokicki Community versus Cancer Classic.
