LAKE FOREST, Ill. – After a season opening home loss at the hands of St. Ambrose University, the Rockford College looked to nab their first win on the season as they opened action at the Lake Forest College Forrester Tip-Off Tournament against Grinnell College. The Regents certainly had their chances, but ultimately fell 55-54.
Neither team managed to gain control of the game’s opening half, evidenced by nine lead changes and three ties. Rockford fought back from a five point deficit with just under six minutes to play in the first stanza and ended the half on a 5-0 run to take a 30-26 lead into the break.
The Regents continued their solid play in the second half, extending their advantage to a game-high 13 points with 6:36 remaining on a jumper by sophomore Kelcy Thorsen (Ottawa, Ill./ Serena). Unfortunately, it would be the last Regents field goal of the game. Over the game’s final minutes, the Regents committed six turnovers and missed three of their final four foul shots, as Grinnell closed the game on an 18-3 run.
The Regents (0-2) were led by junior Britney Curry’s (Merrillville, Ind./ Merrillville)18 points. Junior Nicole Olson (Shannon, Ill./ Eastland) added 14 points off the bench. Senior Megan Lawler (Pearl City, Ill./ Pearl City) grabbed a game-high 13 rebounds.
Rockford will face host Lake Forest College on Saturday at 3:00 p.m.
