Browse musem, shop without kids
A few events this weekend at the Discovery Center and the Burpee Museum of Natural History in Rockford:

Discovery After Dark, a time — from 5 to 9 p.m. Friday — for those 21 and older to play and hang out at the Discovery Center Museum, 711 N. Main St., without any kids. Shop for the holidays with a 20 percent discount on gift shop purchases. Food available for purchase. Cash bar.
Cost is $7.
Sylvia Branzei (right), author of the popular "Grossology” books, will be at the Burpee Museum, 737 N. Main St., on Saturday. A "Grossology” exhibit is on display in a hall between the Discovery Center and the Burpee.

At 11 a.m., Branzei will give an interactive presentation about snot and other body stuff, and you can learn how to make fake blood and wounds. At 2 p.m., make other fake icky stuff.

Cost is $12 and includes admission to either museum and one or both of Branzei presentations. 815-963-6769; discoverycentermuseum.org.

Little ones to sing at St. Mark Lutheran Church
A free concert featuring singing and readings by young adults from Temple Beth-El and St. Mark Lutheran Church will be at 7 p.m. Sunday at St. Mark Lutheran Church, 675 N. Mulford Road, Rockford.

Singers for the event called "We Gather Together” are being directed by Barbara Simon and Marti Bein. 815-398-3557.

Three plays debut on stage this weekend in the Rock River Valley:
"Yes, Virginia, There is a Santa Claus,”
today through Dec. 5, with show times at 8 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays and 2 p.m. on Sundays at Pec Playhouse Theatre, 314 Main St., Pecatonica. Tickets cost $10. The play is about a girl who writes a letter to the editor of the New York Sun, asking if there is a Santa Claus. (The legendary letter will appear on Christmas Eve in the Rockford Register Star.) 815-239-1210; pecplayhouse.org.

"Disney’s Alice in Wonderland Jr.,” at 7 p.m. today; 1, 4 and 7:30 p.m. Saturday; and 1 and 4 p.m. Sunday at The Sullivan Center, 118 N. Main St., Rockford. Tickets cost $10, $8 for students and seniors. More than 100 children in three casts make up the members in this show about Alice chasing the White Rabbit, beating the Queen of Hearts at her own game and more. 815-222-1218, childrenstheaterproject@yahoo.com.

"Uncommon Women & Others,” at 7:30 p.m. today and Saturday and 2 p.m. Sunday at Rockford College’s Cheek Theatre, 5050 E. State St., Rockford. Tickets cost $10, $7 for students and those 55 and older and may be purchased at the door. The play delves into the lives of a group of seniors at a prestigious women’s college. 815-226-4100.

Laugh it up with Second City
The Second City’s Dysfunctional Holiday Revue is at 7:30 p.m. today at Giovanni’s, 610 N. Bell School Road, Rockford.

The comedic event will raise money for financial aid programs and scholarships at Spectrum School of Rockford. Tickets cost $40 and include light hors d’oeuvres. Alumni of Second City include big-time stars, many of whom were on "Saturday Night Live.” 815-877-1600; spectrumschool.org.

Dance, dine and meet the author
Dance to the tunes of Men of Our Times, eat dinner and bid on live and silent auction items from 6 to 11 p.m. Saturday for The Remedies Ball at the Radisson Hotel & Conference Center, 200 S. Bell School Road, Rockford.
