ROCKFORD, Ill. – The Rockford College women’s basketball team opened the 2010-11 season with a tough task. The Regents welcomed the St. Ambrose University Queen Bees to the Seaver Center on Tuesday night. The Queen Bees opened the season ranked #25 in the NAIA preseason poll, after completing the 2009-10 season with a record of 24-8. St. Ambrose was also led by a returning 3rd Team NAIA All-American. None of this mattered to the Regents when the ball went up.
The Regents got off to a good start, matching the Bees through the first six minutes of the game, and established a three point lead at the 14:00 minute mark. St. Ambrose took control of the game with a quick 10-0 run. Though Rockford cut the lead to one, the Bees responded with a 16-4 and a 36-23 lead at the break.
Every time the Regents tried to mount a comeback in the second half, the Bees managed to respond with a big basket. Several times, Rockford chipped away at the lead, getting it down to seven points, but failed to get the big basket or stop to regain the game’s momentum. St. Ambrose connected on 12-16 free throws in the game’s final five minutes to seal the 75-64 win.
Rockford was led by junior Britney Curry’s (Merrillville, Ind./ Merrillville) 24 points on 9-17 shooting. Senior Megan Lawler (Pearl City, Ill./ Pearl City) added 18 points and seven rebounds.
The Regents (0-1) will travel to Lake Forest, Ill. on Friday for the Lake Forest College Tip-Off Tournament. The Regents will face Grinnell College eon Friday and Lake Forest on Saturday.
