It may be a long way from Mokena to Norfolk, Va., but Kyle Hutter is feeling quite at home at Old Dominion University.

In his team's opening performance of the 2010-11 wrestling season, the senior and Mokena resident took second place at the Hokie Open in Salem, Va.

Hutter, who prepped at Providence Catholic, won four matches in one day - including two by major decision - before falling to Virginia Tech's Devin Carter in the finals.

Hutter, who competes in the 133-pound weight class, is a two-time NCAA qualifier and is ranked No. 8 in the country by InterMat.

At the Hokie Open, Hutter won his first two matches before beating Ben Cash, of Iowa State, 17-4 in the quarterfinals. Hutter then posted a 7-5 victory over Kent State's Tyler Small with a takedown 17 seconds into overtime of their semifinal before being defeated by Carter 11-3 in the championship bout.

The Rockford files

Rockford College women's volleyball player Heather Goodrich (Andrew) recently was named to the 2010 Northern Athletics Conference All-Sportsmanship Team.

Goodrich, a junior middle blocker, led the Regents in blocks with 57 and finished fourth in kills with 114 as Rockford went 7-17 overall and 6-6 in league play.

Getting his kicks

St. Xavier University kicker Tom Lynch (Lincoln-Way East) was one of 42 college football players at his position to be recognized by The Fred Mitchell Award for his excellence on the football field and in the community during October.

The kickers represent nearly every division of college football, with 13 of the honorees hailing from Football Championship Series schools, 13 from the NCAA Division II ranks, 10 out of NCAA Division III and six from the NAIA.

Lynch also was included on the Fred Mitchell Award Preseason Watch List in August and was honored by the organization for his excellence over the month of September as well.

Through the Cougars' first 10 games this season, Lynch was second on the team in scoring with 85 points, having connected on all six field goals and 67 of 69 PAT kicks.

The junior was named the Mid-States Football Association Mideast League Special Teams Player of the Week for the second time this season for the period ending Oct. 11. The Frankfort native is No. 2 on SXU's all-time kickers scoring list.
