Local People: Rock River Valley residents earn honors

Coe College joined forces with Taft Middle School in Cedar Rapids, Iowa to take part in a national service-learning initiative called "Communicating Common Ground.” As part of the program, Coe student Kelly Sandquist of Rockford presented role model speeches and led discussions about college expectations in Vicky Cichoski’s seventh-grade class. Sandquist is the daughter of Tom and Linda Sandquist, and a 2009 graduate of Auburn High School.

Rockford College students involved in student life activities are: Samuel Randall, president of the French Club and German Club, of Caledonia; Kassie Mari, president of the Board Game Club, Anna Muller, president of E.M.B.R.A.C.E, Brittany Salvadore, president of the Feminism Club, Brian Miller, president of the Microfiance Club, Amy Collinsworth president of Rotaract and the Senior Club, all of Rockford; Stephen Kadamian, president of the Rockford Association of Professional Students, of Rockton; and David Smith, president of the Rockford College Literary Magazine, of Winnebago.

Jenna Edwards of Belvidere was inducted into the Epsilon Chi Chapter of Alpha Phi Sigma, the national criminal justice honor society at the University of Illinois, Springfield.

Gymnastic Academy of Rockford gymnasts Annalie Roecker, 10, and Dani Petrousek, 9, made the TOPS National Gymnastic Team after competition at the Karolyi Olympic Training Center in Huntsville, Texas. Erin Harty, 8, qualified as a National B Team member.

Jason C. Ballard, son of Carl and Judy Ballard of Caledonia, received his master’s degree with honors in accounting and financial management from DeVry University’s Keller School of Management. Ballard also passed all of his CPA exams and is now a certified public accountant. He has accepted a job with McGladrey in Schaumburg.

The results from the fall 2010 Rockford Chess Challenge are as follows: First place, individual winners, kindergarten — Jack Wasilewski (House); first grade (tie) — Loral Hess (Washington) — Pavao Vedo (Washington); second grade — Chris Park (Washington), perfect score; third grade (tie) — Sengdao Inthavong (Washington), perfect score; — Dominick Welte (Stone Creek), perfect score; fourth grade — Scott Du (Washington); fifth grade — Riley Brown (Montessori Private), Johann Madix (Washington), Yug Mahajan (Montessori Private), Matthew Werkheiser (Pearl City), Joseph Rynkewicz (House); sixth grade (tie) — Stephen Do (Washington), perfect score; Vincent Do (Washington, a third-grader playing up), perfect score, Spencer Folkerts (Washington), perfect score; seventh grade (tie) — Douglas Chan (Washington), perfect score, Seth Hayes (Washington), perfect score, Sam Rinaldo (Washington), perfect score; eighth grade (tie) — Nadine Didier (Home), Devin McFadden (North Boone) and John Werkheiser (Pearl City).

"Biggest Upset” medals — first grade: Krish Asknani (Johnson); second grade: Caden Royster (Spectrum); third grade: Dominick Welte (Stone Creek); fourth grade: Tanner Leuellen (Montessori Private); fifth grade: Brandon Wallace (Washington); sixth grade: Spencer Folkerts (Washington); seventh grade: David Smith (RESA); eighth grade: Devin McFadden (North Boone).

Eric Hanson of Cherry Valley performed with Augustana Symphony Orchestra in its fall concert. Hanson is majoring in religion and accounting at Augustana College.

Local Augustana Choir members in the annual fall concert were: Ben Ellenberger and Sarah Baxter of Rockford; Andrew Bowley, Matt Nordman and Marlena Wegrowska of Belvidere; Stephanie Conkling of Loves Park; Elizabeth Mayer of Dixon; and Matthew Deets of Polo.
Local Augustana Symphonic Band annual fall concert participants were Michael Carlyle of Belvidere and James Tenney of Rockton.

The Boone County Court Appointed Special Advocate Program has six new advocates. Brett Strand, Terri Ferriter, Diane Poycker, Collatta Wells, Alice Kuhlen and Sarah Holliday were sworn in by the Honorable Fernando Engelsma.

Jeffrey Wang of Auburn High School attended the White House Science Fair, where he heard President Obama speak about the importance to the national economy of science, technology, engineering and mathematics education. Wang’s status as a national finalist in the Young Epidemiology Scholars Competition earned him the invitation to participate in the event.
