Local People: Rock River Valley residents earn honors

The following local students graduated from Northern Illinois University in summer 2010: Christopher Codina, Emily Cooper, Jeremy Darmon and Nicholas Slezak of Belvidere; Brittney Fry of Caledonia; Joshua Rieck of Byron; Sean McInerney and Cameron Wills of Davis Junction; Kevin Blumeyer of Oregon; Fatlume Asiku of Polo; Aldo Hueramo, Laura Price, Sara Reed and Shana Steward of Rochelle; Amber Larson of Stillman Valley; Kathryn Eschan-Rovelstad and Erin Midtsem of Cherry Valley; Suzanne Bates of Durand; Cory Jacobs and Roseann Williams of Loves Park; Seema Chopra of Machesney Park; Lauren Braico, Charles Cozart Jr., Bryan Cutler, Charles Davis, Sarah Easter, Peter Grill, Britta Gustafson, Jessica Hoskins, Brooke Johnson, Courtney Jones, Matthew Kieffer, Bridget Lara, Marissa Lester, Christopher Meshes, Cesar Ordonez, Andres Ortega, Michelle O’Shaughnessy, Tyler Schwarz, Kristin Stupka, Hannah Wearsch, Keegan West and Jordan Zurowski of Rockford; Tiffany Carlson, Caitlin Olson and Christopher Wilson of Roscoe; and Cyle Coolidge of South Beloit.

Local recipients of the University of Illinois Children of Veterans Scholarship award are Todd Squires of Christian Life High School, Adam Kney of Boylan Catholic High School, and Kyle Wogaman and Thomas McGinniss of Hononegah High School. The scholarships provide a tuition waiver for four years at any of three campuses of the University of Illinois.

Taylor Graydon of Rockford was accepted for admission for the 2011-12 academic year to Luther College. Graydon received a presidential scholarship.

The following students were elected student senators for their respective classes at Rockford College for the 2010-11 school year: Dominick Bennett, Rockford (first-year); Mark Westphal, Belvidere (junior); and Amy Collinsworth, Rockford (senior). Student senators represent the interests of their classes in the college’s Student Government Association.

The Lincoln Academy’s Student Laureate Awards are presented for excellence in curricular and extracurricular activities to seniors from each of the four-year, degree-granting colleges and universities in Illinois. At the Student Laureate Convocation, each will receive a Student Laureate Medallion, along with an honorarium check and certificate of achievement. Angela Ng, Illinois Institute of Technology, and Stacey Slintak, Rock Valley College, of Rockford received the award.

Casey Boyd, son of Dave and Lisa Boyd of Rockford, earned the rank of Eagle Scout. For his Eagle service project, Casey built seven shelters for the Birds of Prey at the Atwood Environmental Center in New Milford. Casey is a member of Boy Scout Troop No. 57 and is a senior at Jefferson High School.

Colleen Bartimoccia of Rockford is a member of Celebration, the Augustana College gospel choir. Bartimoccia is a sophomore majoring in pre-music education-vocal.
Nine Rockford College alumni garnered honors at the college’s annual reunion. The awards honor those who have given service to the college or have excelled in their profession. The winners: Talcott Cross Award to Marci Jumisko (’92); Karl C. Williams Award to David Rydell (’63); Award of Distinction to Dr. Hind Rassam Culhane (’60), Marvin S. Cutler (’65), Paula Ericson Egelson (’75), Craig Eley (’70); Outstanding Young Alumni Award to Cindy O’Brien Harris (’95); Alumna/Alumnus of the Year Award to Joel Moore (’00); and the Mary Ashby Cheek Award to Gary Lubbert.

Jenna Edwards of Belvidere was inducted into the Epsilon Chi chapter of Alpha Phi Sigma, the national criminal justice honor society at the University of Illinois, Springfield.
