Bern Sundstedt, a Rockford College graduate and long-time development officer at the school, has been appointed the new vice president for institutional advancement, the college announced today.

The move is part of a long-range plan to continue building capacity and make good on the recent, marked success of the college and Sundstedt’s immediate predecessor, John McNamara.

Since assuming the office in 2006, McNamara has led college efforts to secure more than $3.2 million for capital improvements. He has also overseen a period during which more than $5 million has been raised to support operations. More than $500,000 has been contributed to the endowment fund and sentiment among alumni and the community is strong.

McNamara, a former Rockford mayor, will remain at the college in a new role as senior development officer. In that position, he will direct efforts to secure special and planned gifts while maintaining the strong government relations that he has built on behalf of the college.

"I am so glad that the college has accepted my desire to relinquish administrative duties as vice president,” said McNamara. "I can now focus my efforts entirely on serving our mission through the pursuit of special and deferred gifts. Bern will do a superb job as vice president and together we will continue to work passionately for Rockford College.”

At various times throughout his 16 years as a key player in Rockford College advancement, Sundstedt has been directly responsible for alumni affairs, college relations, the annual fund, planned giving, grants, and major gift initiatives.

"It is rare that a college has at its disposal such an experienced advancement professional,” said college president Robert L. Head. "Bern has been such an integral part of our recent success, serving the college on so many fronts. He couples that knowledge with a deep-seated passion that should serve us well. At the same time, I am pleased that John will continue on to help maintain that vital link between the college and the community.”

Sundstedt started with the college in 1994 and is a 1977 Rockford College graduate with a bachelor’s degree in fine arts. He begins his new responsibilities November 1.

"I look forward to the coming challenge,” says Sundstedt. "Of course we will be looking to generate as much monetary support for the college and its students as we can. But, perhaps more important is our work to develop ways in which RC can maintain its role as an active partner in the future of this region and the world, as it proudly has for each of the last 163 years.”
