ROCKFORD — Simpler may be better for the winless Rockford Regents.
"We are trying to find what we do well, trying to simplify things and get back to a very basic level,” said interim head coach Patrick Babcock. "We’re trying to find the things we feel confident we can do.”
The Regents (0-4, 0-1 NAC) will try their new strategy Saturday on the road against Lakeland College (1-3, 0-1 NAC).
Rockford’s offense has been troublesome this season. The Regents have scored just 38 points and are averaging 145 total yards per game, leading Babcock to scale back the playbook.
"We have success against our own defense, which in my opinion is the best defense in this conference, yet it doesn’t translate to the game,” said senior running back Jason Hosey. "That is the hardest thing.
"We just have to get that chemistry were it automatically clicks on Saturdays.”
Rockford’s defense has been the bright spot of the disappointing season. The Regents rank fourth in the NAC, allowing 341 yards per game.
The defense couldn’t be blamed for last week’s 23-0 loss to Concordia-Wisconsin. The Falcons scored touchdowns after taking possession at the Rockford 1 and 2 and had a 45-yard punt return TD.
"We are starting to find our stride defensively,” said Babcock, whose unit limited Concordia to 121 total yards and seven first downs.
The defense will be tested through the air this week as Lakeland has thrown for 951 yards and rushed for just 269. Lakeland quarterback Jake Dworak has thrown seven TDs and nine interceptions.
"We have a few new wrinkles on defense we are going to put in this week,” said senior linebacker Brent Alexander. "I’m pretty confident our defensive backs and linebackers will be able to stop the passing game.”
