Rockford College has been listed among the top 15 percent of colleges and universities in the U.S. to accommodate students with military experience.

The list of selected "military friendly” schools was released recently by G.I. Jobs, one of several military-related publications produced by Victory Media. Schools on the list range from state universities and private colleges to community and technical colleges. The common bond is their shared priority of recruiting students with military experience.

Barrett Bell, vice president of enrollment management at Rockford College, says the college puts a high premium on recruiting veterans because they add richness to the college environment.

"Military students can bring a high degree of maturity, life experiences, diversity, leadership and worldliness to the classroom,” he says. "Other students and faculty benefit from the different perspectives that service members and veterans bring.”

The list of military friendly schools was compiled through research starting last spring in which more than 7,000 schools nationwide were polled. Methodology, criteria and weighting were developed with the assistance of an academic advisory board made up of select college representatives and officials from the U.S. Veterans Administration, the American Council on Education, and Student Veterans of America.

Derek Blumke of the student veterans group, says the military friendly schools list "is the gold standard in letting veterans know which schools offer them the greatest opportunity, flexibility, and overall experience.”

Rockford’s Bell says the list is important now because the post-9/11 GI Bill has given veterans significantly more financial resources to go to college.

"It’s really opened up some doors as far as veterans are concerned,” he said, "and we’re pleased and honored to be able to accommodate them.”
