COLLEGE REPORT: Thomas shows significant improvement at UTEP

Ottawa grad Drew Thomas already has passed what he did one year ago.

Thomas, a 5-foot-10, 180-pound University of Texas-El Paso defensive back, had four tackles in three games in 2009. One year later, Thomas has 11 tackles, five of which are solo tackles.

Texas-El Paso started the year with a 31-10 win over University of Arkansas-Pine Bluff, during which Thomas finished with five tackles (two solos). One week later, Thomas fared better, even if UTEP did not. In UTEP's 54-24 loss to the University of Houston, Thomas finished with six tackles, three of which were solos.

"Drew is a hard worker," UTEP's defensive coordinator Andre Patterson. "He has done a great job of improving himself in spring and fall camp. He has done very well in the first two games and has competed very well."...

Former Mendota football player Erik Weber had seven tackles (five solos) as his college team, Monmouth College lost a 17-15 battle to Grinnell College. With the loss, Monmouth slipped to 0-2 on the year. ...

Ottawa grad Brad Wignes had four assisted tackles as his college team, St. Cloud State University, defeated Concordia University-St. Paul 35-10. Wignes had one tackle for one yard of loss. ...

Former Ottawa golfer Eric Farrell, a Monmouth College freshman, shot a 90 at the Carl Sandburg Classic. Farrell who played as part of the Monmouth College White Team, helped them finish with a stroke count of 314. The Monmouth College Red Team finished third with a a stroke count of 297. Carl Sandburg College won the outing with a 287. ...

St. Ambrose University sophomore and Marquette grad Jacob Rorem finished 73rd in the 8,000-meter race, crossing the finish line in 30 minutes, 51.18 seconds. St. Ambrose University finished 11th in the team battle with 347 points. Olivet Nazarene University won the outing with 32 points. ...

Carthage College senior Kaitlyn Farrell, an Ottawa grad, teamed with Salem, Wisc. native Holly Weber to win the No. 3 doubles in a dual outing between Carthage and Concordia University-Wisconsin. The pair won a 2-0 decision. Carthage downed CU-Wisconsin 8-1. ...

Elmhurst College's Janelle Thompson, a Mendota grad, had eight digs and five kills but it was not enough to power EC beyond Wisconsin Lutheran College, who won a 3-0 decision. Elmhurst is 3-3. ...

Serena graduate Katy Atkerson, a Rockford College junior, has 27 digs through the first five Rockford matches. Rockford is 2-3 on the year. ...

Somonauk grad Matt Houghtaylen, an Aurora University junior, has played in all five soccer games. Houghtaylen has one shot on goal, but no other stats. Houghtaylen is a junior midfielder. Aurora is 3-2. ...
