Golden Apple Foundation volunteers delivered about 6,500 Golden Delicious apples to middle and high school teachers today as part of its Apple for the Teacher Day, to kick off Golden Apple award nominations.

Rockford College football players helped pass out the apples today in the parking lot at Logli Supermarket, 6410 E. State St.

Students, parents and colleagues can nominate outstanding sixth- through 12th-grade teachers in Boone and Winnebago counties to be recognized with a Golden Apple Award for Excellence in Education.

The Golden Apple Foundation receives more than 1,500 nominations each year. Pre-K through fifth-grade teachers will be recognized next year.

The foundation will present five Golden Apples to winning teachers in March. They’ll be honored at the 15th annual Excellence in Education Banquet April 20 at the Radisson Hotel.

Nominations are open through Oct. 22. Forms are available at area schools and other sites, including Chase Bank, Alpine Bank, Blackhawk Bank, Northwest Bank, Riverside Community Bank, Rockford Bank & Trust, Harris Bank, Logli Supermarkets and all branches of area public libraries.

Visit for more information about the nominating and selection process and history of the award. Nominations are also accepted online.
