ROCKFORD, Ill. – It has been a difficult early season for a young Regents men’s soccer team. They hadn’t scored since a 7-2 loss at Beloit on September 1 and were starting the season 0-4. But Rockford hoped to change their fates as they played host to Maranatha Baptist Bible College for their first home match. The Crusaders came into the match with a 3-1 record and proved to be a great test for the Regents.
After 45 scoreless minutes, Rockford senior Bronson Garcia (Derby, Kan./ Derby) scored his first goal of the year, giving the Regents a 1-0 advantage. Ten minutes later, it looked as though the Crusaders were in prime position to notch the equalizer. A Regents foul led to a Maranatha penalty kick, but freshman goalie Sam Wangelin (Waukesha, Wis./ Neenah) was up to the task, making a diving save to preserve the lead. Four minutes later, Maranatha would notch tying goal on a rebound from a Wangelin save.
Ninety exciting minutes of soccer just was not enough for this match. For that matter, neither was 110 minutes. Both teams managed good scoring chances during the extra periods, but neither could find the net. After a hard fought double overtime, the teams settled for a 1-1 tie.
Wangelin finished the match with nine total saves.
The Regents will return to the pitch on Saturday, September 25 when they travel to Fond du Lac, Wisconsin to face Marian University.
