ALMA, Mich. – Against Dubuque, it was one good quarter. Against Loras, it was a good second half. Coming into Saturday’s meeting at Alma College, the Regents had a tough hill to climb, but with four solid quarters of football, Rockford could erase the 110-24 cumulative score over the past two seasons.
Through three quarters, that is exactly what is looked as though the Regents would do. Trailing 3-0 late in the first quarter, senior Josh Ross (Elgin, Ill./ Larkin) got the Regents into the scoring column with a 40-yard interception return for touchdown. Holding their first lead of the season, Rockford’s defense stiffened. Over the next two quarters, the Regents forced three turnovers and three punts. A 32-yard field goal by junior Anthony Beres (Hoffman Estates, Ill./ Hoffman Estates) put the Regents up 10-3 with 15 minutes to play.
But one five minute stretch to begin the fourth quarter changed the game. A 63-yard Alma drive culminated in the game tying touchdown. Alma then recovered an on-side kick and drove 55 yards for what become the game winning touchdown, taking a 17-10 lead with just over nine minutes to play.
An interception by linebacker Antonio Richardson (Matteson, Ill./ Rich South) at Alma’s 46 yard line gave Rockford great field position to tie the score, but interceptions on consecutive drives led to 10 Alma points and a 27-10 score, putting the game out of reach.
Ross led the Regents defensive with 13 total tackles, including one half sack and recorded Rockford’s only touchdown on a 40 yard interception return. Sophomore safety Andrew Hildebrand (Belvidere, Ill./ Belvidere North) recorded 11 tackles and forced two fumbles. Junior Kirk Kabala (Plano, Ill./ Plano) and senior Brent Alexander (LeRoy, Ill./ LeRoy) recorded one sack each, while freshman Josh Kroesch (Bradley, Ill./ Bradley-Bourbounnais) split the sack with Ross.
Offensively, Rockford quarterback Tyler Baran (Plainfield, Ill./ Plainfield North) finished 9-26 with 2 interceptions for 115 yards, hitting Koree Blackful (Sauk Village, Ill./ Rich East), Cameron Carter (Roscoe, Ill./ Christian Life),and Dana Apel (Rockford, Ill./ Auburn) three times each. Senior running back Jason Hosey (Chicago, Ill./ Prosser) rushed for 26 yards, while Carter added 21 yards to the rushing attack.
The Regents will take a week off before opening Northern Athletics Conference play with a trip to Mequon, Wis. to face Concordia University Wisconsin.
