Rockford College’s first game under new head coach Patrick Babcock started out good Thursday night. It just didn’t end well.
The Regents owned a 7-0 lead late in the first quarter over the Dubuque hosts that hammered them by 53 points in last year’s opener. But they made too many blunders after that as they fell 41-7 to open this one. Babcock, in a phone interview from the team’s bus, talked about the emotional roller coaster of an opener.
"When we were up 7-0 and were holding them, the guys were energized. We were really excited after that and we kept battling,” said Babcock, a former Stillman Valley and Illinois standout, and now the interim head coach of the Regents. "But it turned into a snowstorm for awhile there in the second quarter. We made some coverage mistakes and stopped tackling defensively, and we struggled to move the ball on offense.”
Leonard Brady’s 73-yard punt return for a touchdown was sandwiched by two long Dubuque drives as the home team took control.
Dubuque outgained Rockford 452-138 in total yards, and quarterback Wyatt Hanus was 20-for-27 for 311 yards with three TDs while Rockford QB Tyler Baran was 9-for-22 for 55 yards. Baran did get the Regents on the board with a 1-yard TD dive with 5:24 left in the first quarter after the Regents held Dubuque scoreless on its first four drives.
"If we can just bottle what we did in that first quarter and keep it going all the way, I believe this team can be really good this year,” Babcock said. "But I’m not into moral victories either. I go in to win. Our goal is not to play these teams good for awhile; our goal is to beat those teams, and we didn’t tonight.”
Cameron Carter finished as Rockford’s leading rusher with 40 yards on 13 carries, and Koree Blackful had three catches for 31 yards.
Andrew Hildebrand led the team in tackles with seven while John Kroesch had the Regents’ lone sack and Tyler Free had the team’s interception.
Rockford will look for its first win under Babcock when it takes on Loras at home at 1 p.m. Sept. 11.
