Get ready to celebrate significant milestones
A message from college president Robert L. Head, Ph.D.

Dear students, faculty and staff:

During the Opening Convocation, I referenced several milestone events that we will acknowledge in a number of ways this year. The first is the 150th birthday of our illustrious alumna, social reformer Jane Addams, which takes place on September 6. Next we acknowledge the 50th year of our presence on this campus following 113 years at our downtown location. Finally, we will recognize the 25th anniversary of the Music Academy of Rockford College.

There are several events scheduled in the weeks ahead to recognize the significance of these milestones:

  • September 7: The Jane Addams Center for Civic Engagement will host a birthday celebration in recognition of Jane from noon until 2 p.m. in the Lion’s Den.
  • September 8: Rockford College, the City of Chicago and the Jane Addams Hull House Association will join together in celebrating Jane’s birthday at noon in Daley Plaza.
  • September 14:  From 11 a.m. to noon, the college co-hosts a celebration for Jane at the Belvidere Oasis on (what else?) the Jane Addams Memorial Tollway. The party is co-sponsored by the Jane Addams Hull House Association and the Illinois Tollway Authority. Join us for cake with the Vocal Collective singing happy birthday, see a Jane Addams exhibit and watch a Jane Addams re-enactor at this special event.

The Music Academy of Rockford College plans a year-long 25th anniversary celebration called "Bravissima” featuring its own talent plus outside professional musicians. The season kicks off with "Cellobration!” on September 12 at 4 p.m. in the Maddox Theatre. Call our box office for ticket information.

Stay tuned for details on a series of events marking our 50th year on this campus.

Have a great week!

Robert L. Head, Ph.D.

Open mic is turned on again

Our open mic's for the fall 2010 semester kicked off last Thursday to an enthusiastic audience. Prof. Matt Flamm, philosophy, and co-host Ron Rawhoof invite performers of all levels and styles up to display their talents. All performers are warmly received and invited to join a growing listserve of musicians to provide mutual support, feedback, and encouragement.

Though open mic leans towards music (top notch PA!), other performances are welcome, including spoken word and poetry.

New to this season will be a portal spot for the gatherings, chronicling the open mic's history, offering links and showcasing photos and write-ups of performances. Stay tuned.

If you're on Facebook, please join and support our Rockford College Open Mic group. So, come on out and "bring your thing!" every Thursday at 7 p.m. in the Lion’s Den.
