Who is she? Nikole Clevenger of Machesney Park is soon to be a sophomore attending Rockford College’s elementary education program. The 2009 Harlem High School graduate works as a sales associate at Fashion Bug in Machesney Park, where she is organizing a school supplies drive. She plans to start community service with the Jane Addams Center for Civic Engagement through the college.

What inspired you to do what you do? I have grown up with community service as part of my life. Every year my parents encouraged volunteering and service by donating to organizations and participating in events, especially through our church. When I got older I joined the Upward Bound Program at Rock Valley College, which further emphasized the importance of getting involved in the community.

What’s next? Right now, I am heading up a school supply drive in support of the Harlem School District called "Fill the Bus.” We are accepting any school supply donations at the Fashion Bug, 1049 West Lane Road, until Aug. 21. Anyone who donates will receive a coupon to use on a purchase. The donated supplies will be turned over to the School District to distribute to students who cannot purchase them on their own.

Something people would be surprised to learn about you: I am all about Spanish. I love the language, the cultures and especially the food. I want to get my endorsement in Spanish so that I will be able to teach middle school Spanish.

Your motto or favorite quote: I’ve always had a hard time dealing with change, and I actually got this quote in a fortune cookie a few years ago: Avoid holding onto ideas just because you are used to them.
What’s one law you would change? I think motorcyclists should be required by law to wear a helmet.

Something you find inspirational: When I need some inspiration or even just some motivation, I turn to music.

Favorite movie: "The Wedding Date.”

Something you think is underrated: Rock Cut State Park. I love spending time out on the water and even just driving through.

Something you think is overrated: I think in today’s society weight and appearance are ridiculously overrated. Young girls grow up today with such a negative body image, and almost nothing is being done to combat this.

Favorite book: I’m a sucker for the "Twilight Saga.”

Role models: My mom and Aunt Kris.

Something you think the Rock River Valley needs: The area needs more programs like Rock Valley College’s Upward Bound program. The program helps students get prepared for college while exposing them to different cultures and service opportunities.
