Who is he? Vince Chiarelli, 20, is a full-time student at Rockford College and lives in Rockford. His parents are Connie and Joe Chiarelli, and he has a sister, Claudia.
Do you belong to any clubs/groups/boards? I am the vice president of the Rockford College Music Club, a Rockford College student mentor and part of Intervarsity.
What inspires you to do what you do? I am inspired to keep studying in college in order to one day have a good job that will allow me to provide for myself and a family.
What is up next for you that readers should know about? I have begun playing around the Rockford area with my band, The Vince Chiarelli Band. I hope to continue playing at various places around northern Illinois in order to share the music I have written. My music can be heard at community.ascap.com/VinceC. I also am in the process of re-establishing my grandfather’s music publishing company, Vincent Chiarelli Publishing Co.
What do you do for fun? I love writing and playing music. I play guitar, bass and drums, and I am also a singer. I also love spending time with my girlfriend, Shayna.
Where’s your favorite place to go in the Rock River Valley? I’ve always enjoyed walking on the Sinnissippi Bike Path.
Your motto in life: Don’t ask what if, ask what is.
What do you like best about your job/school? What is the most difficult part of it you face? I like Rockford College because it’s a small campus and has a great staff. They stress community, and everyone is very helpful and understanding. The most difficult part is keeping up with my classes while also trying to promote my music on the side.
What is the best advice you have received? My grandfather, Vince, always told me never to be jealous, because it is the one thing that can tear people apart. He told me to be happy for people who have achieved good things in their lives, and not to be jealous, because if I work hard enough I can have anything I want.
If you could take two weeks off from all your responsibilities, where would you go and what would you do? I would go to Sicily. My entire family is from Sicily and it is so beautiful.
What is your biggest pet peeve? Bad drivers.
What is something you think the Rock River Valley needs? A place where young adults can hang out and have fun, because Rockford doesn’t have many places like that, especially in the winter.
