Move-in day spurs memories

Occasionally, members of the Executive Council or their designees write the weekly column. This week, we hear from Matt Phillips, associate vice president of operations.

Dear students, faculty and staff:
I turned around and I wasn’t supposed to. At least that is what my mother told me afterwards… 
It had been a very warm day in August the day my parents dropped me off to college for the first time on the campus of Illinois State University. I had just hugged and kissed my family goodbye and was walking towards the quad past Milner Library, when I stopped and looked back. To this day I can vividly remember my parent’s faces as they watched their boy walk away towards his first day of independence. I turned around and I wasn’t supposed to. All it did was make them cry more.

Feelings of hope, excitement and possibility ruled the day. It had been an eventful venture to that point already, meeting a new roommate, lugging a loft up eight flights of stairs, and just generally having all of the changes taking place in my life swimming in my head. Yet I walked away and began my collegiate experience. Don’t worry…I talked to my parents later in the day once I got back to the dorm phone. (Cell phones weren’t pervasive just yet.)

I reminisce about my move-in day every August as preparations for our students reach a fever pitch. Next to commencement, move-in day is my favorite day of the year. Campus is buzzing with an energy and excitement unique to college campuses. You can almost feel a combined sense of hope and possibility from our first year students.

As we enter August thinking about these things helps me remember why we are here.  Whether it is working on a new contract, worrying incessantly about the campus air conditioning system, or just any of the daily tasks we all take on in our jobs, we are here for our students. It is because of them we do the things we do. Remembering that is exciting. That does give me hope, and that does mean this place is full of possibility.

I look forward to welcoming our students this month, and I bet you, that if you stay around long enough on move-in day you will catch some of our first years turn around when they weren’t supposed to.

Admission counselor is employee of the month for June
Claire Awowede is our employee of the month for June, according to an announcement from the CARE committee. Nominators had this to say about Claire: "Claire quietly sets an example through her hard work and dedication to her students. She is a strong advocate for her students and will go above and beyond to answer their questions.”

By the way, the CARE Committee needs your help in nominations!  Please nominate faculty or staff members who have done an outstanding job for employee of the month. You can drop your nomination off at the Mail Desk, Attention: CARE or e-mail to Care@rockford.edu. Please include name, title of employee, and reason for nomination.


MBA program adds two new tracks
The master’s of business administration (MBA) program at Rockford College has added two new tracks to its arsenal of specialties, making the program even more relevant and attractive to area professionals, college officials say.

New tracks have been added in project management and entrepreneurship, effective this fall, both consisting of nine courses and three electives.

Each of the new tracks has some interesting linkages with other programs of the college or programs in the community.

For instance, in one of the entrepreneurship courses, students will spend time in one of their electives consulting with a family-owned business through the college’s new Family Business Center. Students in a project management class, meanwhile, work on a project to apply their training while raising money for a nonprofit group of their choice.

Jeff Fahrenwald, director of the college’s MBA program, said the changes came about after the program conducted a survey through the Rockford Chamber of Commerce indicating a strong demand for these concentrations. 

"We’ve always been known for our ability to change to meet market demand and to create opportunities for practical experience,” says Jeff Fahrenwald, director of the college’s MBA program. "Our program was created almost 30 years ago to support the educational needs of the community and we continue to add course work to accomplish that goal.”  

The MBA program, which now operates out of new facilities at 5100 E. State St., already has specialty tracks in management, marketing, accounting, nonprofit and public administration and finance to go along with the general MBA track.

RC staffers help MDA raise big bucks
As we told you in past issues, three staff members participated in the MDA lock up last week – Cassie Swanson, marketing; Renee Smith, box office; and Kelly James, library. These three joined other volunteers in helping MDA raise an astounding $110,000 toward MDA research and services. Well-done! 



Two with RC ties to run Chicago Marathon for respective causes 
In other fundraising news, RC student Cassie Henwood is running in the Chicago Marathon October 10 and raising money for cancer research through the American Cancer Society. And Teddy Phillips, assistant to the president, is also running the marathon as part of Team World Vision, an organization that works to transform communities all lover the world and also aides in disaster relief. She is raising money to provide things like clean water, nutritious food, education, medical care, and economic opportunities to some of the poorest communities in Africa. The main focus of her fundraising is to provide clean water and good sanitation since that can lead to a reduction in child mortality, cut transmission of malaria, improve public health, and reduce extreme poverty in hundreds of communities. From the Wellness Committee: 7 ways to make water taste better
Simple tips for livening up your drinking water By Jen Laskey (Everyday Wellness, Inc.)
Not everybody has a taste for water, but we all need it to ensure that our bodies continue functioning properly. If you want to drink more water, but aren't crazy about the taste (or lack thereof), here are some tips that can make it more enjoyable:

  1. Add fresh fruit. Citrus fruits, such as lemons, limes, and oranges, are classic water enhancers, but other fruit flavors might also tempt your taste buds. Try crushing fresh raspberries or watermelon into your water, or adding strawberry slices. Cucumber and fresh mint are refreshing flavors as well — especially in summer.

  2. Use juice. Any fruit juice can be a good base flavor for water, but tart juices, like cranberry, pomegranate, grape, and apple, are especially delicious. Go for juices that are all natural, with no added sugars. And remember: Fruits and their juices don't just taste good — they contain vitamins and antioxidants that can benefit your health too.

  3. Make it bubbly. Many people prefer sparkling to still water. If plain old water isn't inspiring to you, try a naturally effervescent mineral water — which will give you the added benefit of minerals. Or try bubbly seltzer, a carbonated water. You can add fresh fruit or natural juice flavors to your seltzer, as suggested above, or look for naturally flavored seltzers at your local market. If you become a seltzer devotee, you might want to consider getting a seltzer maker for your home.

  4. Get creative with ice. Some say that ice water tastes better than water served at room temperature. If that's so, flavored ice cubes may make an even better drink. Use some of the flavoring suggestions above and start experimenting with fresh fruit, mint, or cucumber ice cubes. Simply chop your additive of choice, add it to your ice cube tray along with water, then freeze. You may also consider juice, tea, or coffee cubes. If you want to be more creative, use ice cube trays that come in fun shapes, like stars, circles, or even fish.

  5. Drink tea. Herbal, fruit, green, white, and red teas are generally considered to be better for you than black teas (or coffee, for that matter) because they contain little to no caffeine. And there are countless flavors of these teas to choose from. Start with the selection at your local market or health food store. If you're interested in pursuing more exotic flavors and sophisticated teas, start researching the vast array of specialty teas that come from all parts of the globe.

  6. Try bouillons, broths, and consommés. If your palate leans toward the savory, you may pass on tea and start sipping one of these hot and savory liquids instead. Choose low-fat and low-sodium versions for maximum health benefits. Because soup is water-based, a cup of hot soup will count toward your daily fluid consumption.

  7. Add fast flavor. If you're looking for a quick-and-easy flavor booster, you might also consider sugar-free drink mixes, and flavor cartridges that can be used with your faucet filter system.

  8. The walking group needs more members! Every Tuesday and Thursday we walk a mile around campus starting at 11:30 a.m. at the mail desk. Come be a part of a fun group!

Friday Night Flix: "Men in Black” at dusk on the north lawn of Davis Park, 320 S. Wyman St., in downtown Rockford. Attendees can start setting up lawn chairs around 7 p.m. The free movies begin with an on-screen introduction from the Register Star’s Movie Man, Will Pfeifer, and are projected on a screen more than 14 feet high and 25 feet wide. Vendors will offer free popcorn and food and drinks for purchase.



RC in the news
Several Rockford College faculty members were spotlighted for their achievements in the Rockford Register Star business section yesterday. They included Prof. Stephen Hicks, philosophy, and Gary Lubbert of the BSMS program (faculty and adjunct faculty of the year); Jeff Fahrenwald, MBA program, who received an honor from Midwest Business Administration International; and professors JJ Asongu, Jules Gleicher, and John Burns, all of whom have given presentations or attended conferences.
