A new degree in acting/directing at Rockford College offers theatre students another option as they seek to create a well-rounded background in the arts.

The new bachelor of fine arts (BFA) is a change from the previous bachelor of arts degree in acting and directing. And while the distinction may seem subtle, theatre faculty at the college say it should allow it to compete with similar programs at much bigger schools.

"Clearly, the standard for college and university acting programs is the BFA,” says Noel Rennerfeldt, chair of Rockford’s performing arts department. "We feel we have the expertise in our faculty to create a viable and competitive BFA.”

The college’s bachelor of arts degree in theatre arts will continue as a generalist program, Rennerfeldt says, and as a secondary education track. Rockford also offers the BFA in musical theatre performance and the BA in music.

As part of the new BFA program, the department has added several new courses in acting, both practical and theoretical. The entire sequence includes 16 courses equivalent to 49 credits which, when added to other college course requirements, leads to the BFA.

"This enhanced program puts us in the enviable position of offering the training that students are looking for in the setting of a small, private liberal arts college,” adds Rennerfeldt.

For more information on the theatre program at Rockford College, call the college’s admission office at 815-226-4050 or see Tours of the Clark Arts Center, home to the program, can be arranged.
