Graduate assistants make impact on RC
 
Occasionally, members of the Executive Council or their designees write columns in the newsletter. Today, we hear from Ginnie Weckerly, human resources manager.
 
Dear students, faculty and staff:
 
As the summer flies by, I begin to think about my summer work and one activity that I enjoy very much – talking to graduate assistant candidates. I always consider myself lucky that I get to be one of the first people to talk with individuals interested in working at the college. This is especially true when it comes to graduate assistants. Graduate assistant candidates always come with a special story – one of wanting to advance their education in quest of a career that not only brings financial rewards, but one that will be personally fulfilling.
 
Not everyone understands the positive impact that GA’s make at Rockford College. There are 45 GA’s on campus and they are the people who act as assistant coaches supporting our students long after most of us are home. They are the staff that runs events and activities to make students feel part of community. They manage office functions and get the experience of working for some key staff and faculty at Rockford College, among many other things that I don’t have enough room to mention!
 
The beginning of August will mark the start date for about 15 new graduate assistants and 30 returning GA’s. Watch for them on campus as they make an impact on our daily operations and the lives of Rockford College students. And, don’t forget to stop and thank the GA’s you know for their hard work. In pursuit of a graduate degree, GA’s make their mark on Rockford College!

Guest at RC raves about the hospitality
This past weekend, a young man associated with the AmeriCorps VISTA program through Goodwill Industries wrote to the Rockford Register Star to compliment Rockford College. Bryan Roush had stayed at the college during his assignment and had this to say: 
 
"I would like to thank Rockford College for providing me with attractive, safe and affordable housing while I served as an AmeriCorps VISTA member at Goodwill Industries of Northern Illinois.
 
Because of Rockford College, I was able to live near work without having to spend a great deal of my stipend on more expensive housing.
 
By providing safe and affordable housing, Rockford College allowed me to concentrate on my AmeriCorps VISTA project as the volunteer coordinator for Goodwill.
 
Not only did the college provide excellent housing, but it allowed me to utilize its cafeteria services as well as a number of its on-campus facilities typically reserved for students.
 
I was able to use its first-class gym and workout facilities at no charge as well as attend many of its wonderful on-campus programs.
 
As a young professional coming to a new town, I have felt welcome and appreciated in Rockford and will fondly remember my time in this wonderful city. Thank you, Rockford College.

(a recipe tested and approved by Wealtha Helland, nursing faculty)
 
MEXICAN BAKED POTATOES WITH BEAN-AND-CORN SALSA
4 Large baking potatoes
Bean-and-corn salsa (below)
1/2 cup grated tofu cheese or low-fat shredded mozzarella cheese
1/2 cup tofu sour cream or low fat sour cream (optional)
 
1. Bake potatoes until tender, approximately 35 minutes. To speed up preparation you can microwave the baking potatoes in a covered dish with a small amount of water for approximately 15 minutes, or until just tender.
2. Split the warm potatoes in half lengthwise. Top with bean-and-corn salsa. Sprinkle with the grated cheese of choice. Bake for 5 minutes or microwave for 1 minute to melt the cheese. Serve immediately and top with sour cream of choice.
 
Bean-and-corn salsa
1 cup canned kidney or pinto beans, rinsed and drained
1 cup canned cannellini (white kidney) beans, rinsed and drained
3/4 cup canned corn, drained or fresh corn, cut off cob
1/4 cup red bell pepper, chopped
1/4 cup fresh cilantro, chopped
1/2 cup fresh tomatoes, chopped
2-4 tablespoons canned green chilies, chopped
2 tablespoons scallions, chopped or minced
1 tablespoon lemon juice
1/2 teaspoon ground cumin
1/8 teaspoon chili powder (optional)
1/4 teaspoon garlic powder
 
In medium bowl, mix all ingredients. Cover and refrigerate for at least 1 hour. The flavor is enhanced when the salsa sits for at least an hour, but it can be served immediately. There will be leftover salsa to use for other meals, so cover and chill for later use. Enjoy!  



RC folks going to jail for MDA 

At least two Rockford College staffers, Cassie Swanson, marketing, and Renee Smith, box office, are taking part in the MDA bail and jail fundraising event to help Jerry’s kids.
 
In order to be released on good behavior, the two need your help to raise their "bail.” Just use the links below to make a secure, online donation before July 28.
 
This is a fun event benefiting individuals and families served by MDA who are affected by neuromuscular disease. Cassie and Renee say they are honored to partner with MDA, and help this important cause.

Events which may of interest to the Rockford College community and their families.
 
July 20: Coronado Performing Arts Center Tour, 7 p.m., Coronado Performing Arts Center, 314 N. Main St., Rockford. The tour at the center, which was recently recognized as the top online vote-getter in the Reader’s Choice: 7 Wonders of the U.S. poll by AOL/U.S. Travel Association, is 1.5 hours and takes you into the theater, as well as backstage and into the historic manager’s apartment. July 23: Friday Night Flix presents "Mamma Mia!,” at dusk on the north lawn of Davis Park, 320 S. Wyman St., in downtown Rockford. Attendees can start setting up lawn chairs around 7 p.m. The free movies begin with an on-screen introduction from the Register Star’s Movie Man, Will Pfeifer, and are projected on a screen more than 14 feet high and 25 feet wide. Vendors will offer free popcorn and food and drinks for purchase.
 
July 24: Second Annual Fairy Festival, 5 p.m., Womanspace, 3333 Maria Linden Drive, Rockford. Families and guests will stroll the Womanspace grounds and art galleries. Fairies will lead a scavenger hunt, the Rockford Dance Company will entertain and guests will make fairy crowns and wands to take home. All proceeds benefit Womanspace and the Rockford Dance Company. Cost is $15, $10 in advance; $8 for ages 12 and younger, $5 in advance. Rain date is Sunday. 815-877-0118; www.womanspace-rockford.org.

  • John McNamara (VP, Development) was interviewed by Channel 17 last Wednesday on a new law affecting primary elections in the state.
  •  Pam Clark Reidenbach, NICNE, was quoted by the Rockford Register Star for a story that appeared Sunday on budget problems facing non-profits in the area.
