LOVES PARK, Ill. – The Rockford College baseball team did just about everything they could to give away their second game at the NAC tournament. After a frantic comeback, the Regents did just that, falling to the Aurora University Spartans 7-6, meaning that the Regents needed to win three consecutive games on Saturday and Sunday to advance to the NCAA Tournament,

Rockford plated singles runs in the first and second innings on RBI’s by TJ Stanfield (Mokena, Ill./ Joliet JC) and Jimmy Polster (Spring Valley, Ill./ St. Bede). It was at that point that things went south for Rockford.

Through the game’s final seven innings, the Regents committed a season high eight errors, leading to seven unearned runs, including four unearned runs in the sixth inning alone.
Trailing 6-2 in the seventh inning, Rockford began to mount a comeback. Senior Eric Nicholson (Stillman Valley, Ill./ Rock Valley CC) clubbed his second home run of the day, a two-run shot to left center field.

Down to their final the outs, Rockford seemed to be in position for a rally. Senior Kyle Standridge (Carol Stream, Ill./ Glenbard North), having already extended his hit streak to 41 games, led off the inning with a double down the left field line and advanced to 3rd on a single by senior Tyler Clay (Sammamish, Wash./ Eastlake). With two men on, Nicholson returned to the plate but grounded into a 5-4-3 double play, leaving Standridge at third with two outs. The rally continued as Stanfield homered to right center field, cutting the Regents deficit to 7-6.

The momentum seemed to have swung to the Regents dugout as sophomore Jimmy Dercks (Kaukauna, Wis./ Kaukauna) singled to right but a fielder’s choice by Mike Catalano (Chicago, Ill./ Notre Dame) ended the Regents’ hopes.

Nicholson paced the Regents with three hits and two RBI’s. Standridge, Clay, and Stanfield recorded two hits each, while Stanfield added three RBI’s.

The Regents will face Edgewood College on Saturday afternoon in hopes of another rematch with the Spartans for the title.
