Regents Take 1st Game of Tourney

LOVES PARK, Ill. – The Rockford College baseball team too its first step toward its third Northern Athletics Conference title with a 8-5 win over Concordia University Wisconsin on Friday.

The Regents spotted the Falcons a 4-0 lead through 4.5 innings, then the Regents bats woke up. Consecutive singles by catcher Jordan Shaver (Davis Junction, Ill./ Rock Valley CC), Jimmy Polster (Spring Valley, Ill./ St. Bede), Kyle Standridge (Carol Stream, Ill./ Glenbard North), and Tyler Clay (Sammamish, Wash./ Eastlake) plated Rockford’s first run. Senior Eric Nicholson (Stillman Valley, Ill./ Rock Valley CC) cleared the bases with a towering three-run home run to right center field. Rockford took the lead for good in the sixth inning on RBI’s by Shaver and Clay.

Rockford added insurance runs in the bottom of the eighth inning when Nicholson’s two-run double knocked in Polster and Clay.

Nicholson finished the game 2-5 with five runs batted in. Standridge continued his historic batting streak with a 2-4 performance, extending his streak to 40 consecutive games. Shaver and Clay also finished the game with two hits.

Senior Kevin Patterson (Rockford, Ill./ Lincoln-Way Central) improved to 8-2 on the year after recording seven strike outs in his 6.2 innings pitched. Ben Korth (Freeport, Ill./ Orangeville) recorded his third save, finishing the game’s 2.1 innings.

The Regents will now face the Aurora University Spartans in the tournament’s winners bracket.
