Lawler and Lindgren Named Athletes of the Year

ROCKFORD, Ill. – With the 2009-10 academic year winding down, the Rockford Collage Athletic Department held its annual Athletic Awards Ceremony last night. The annual celebration not only recognizes student-athletes’ performances on the fields of competition but also in the classroom.
Among the academic awards distributed on Sunday evening Athletic Directors Honor Roll, which recognized 67 student-athletes with cumulative grade point averages over 3.0. Twenty-three juniors and seniors were inducted into the Chi Alpha Sigma National Athletics Honor Society. These student-athletes maintained at least a 3.4 GPA while participating in at least one sport.
Also recognized were individual MVP’s for each sport, along with winners of the Margaret and Jack O’Shita award presented for team spirit and the highest standards of sportsmanship. The awards’ 2010 winners are Jackie Vensel (Belvidere, Ill./ Belvidere), a senior softball player, and junior golfer Anthony Helmer (Machesney Park, Ill./ Harlem).
The highest athletic awards of the night were the 2009-10 Female and Male Athletes of the Year. Candidates for each award consist of the MVP’s of each individual sport.
The 2009-10 Female Athlete of the Year was Megan Lawler (Pearl City, Ill./ Pearl City), a junior physical education major. Lawler was the MVP of both the volleyball and basketball teams. Captain of both teams, Lawler was named to the All-Northern Athletic Conference 2nd team for both sports. She was among the NAC volleyball leader in kills, service aces and points. She also ranked 5th in the NAC basketball rankings in scoring and rebounding, while recording 10 double-doubles in 24 games.
The 2009-10 Male Athlete of the Year was Matt Lindgren (Oak Forest, Ill./ Oak Forest), a senior biology major. Lindgren was MVP of the cross country, indoor and outdoor track teams. Lindgren finished 3rd in the 2009 NAC Cross Country Meet. The senior won both the indoor and outdoor 800 meter championships at the annual conference meet. He also added the outdoor 1500 meter title.
