LOVES PARK, Ill. – After Tuesday’s disappointing 16-6 Senior Day home loss to Illinois Wesleyan University, the Rockford College baseball team needed to regroup quickly as they traveled to Naperville, Ill. to face the #20 team in the country, the North Central College Cardinals. And regroup they did, en route to an 8-7 upset.
The Regents wasted absolutely no time in jumping on the Cardinals, as senior third baseman Kyle Standridge (Carol Stream, Ill./ Glenbard North) extended his nation-leading hit streak to 37 games with his first home run of the season on the first pitch of the game. The Regents extended their lead to 2-0 when freshman Kyle LaMore (Bourbonnais, Ill./ Bradley) double home sophomore Jimmy Dercks (Kaukauna, Wis./ Kaukauna). In the third inning, senior TJ Stanfield (Mokena, Ill./ Joliet JC) led off with a triple before coming home on a Dercks single.
In the seventh inning, senior left fielder Eric Nicholson (Stillman Valley, Ill./ Rock Valley CC) hit his sixth home run of the season, a three run shot over the left field wall, plating Standridge and senior Tyler Clay (Sammamish, Wash./ Eastlake). The Regents would needed every bit of their 6-0 lead in the eighth inning, as two errors and four hits led to five Cardinals runs in the bottom of the eighth inning.
The Regents responded with two more runs in the top of the ninth as Nicholson’s triple accounted for his fourth and fifth RBI’s of the game, giving Rockford a 8-5 lead. The Cardinals responded with two runs in the bottom of the final frame, but junior Ben Korth (Freeport, Ill./ Orangeville) shut the door to record his second save of the season.
Senior Travis Mohr (Bryant, Iowa/ Northeast) improved to 4-0 on the season with five innings of shutout ball, allowing just five hits.
The Regents will close their regular season on Saturday with a 2:00 p.m. doubleheader at Benedictine University. With victories on Saturday, the Regents will go into the NAC postseason tournament as the #1 seed.
