ROCKFORD, Ill. – The Rockford College baseball team used dominant pitching performances and solid offense to extend its winning streak to four games with Wednesday’s 12-2 and 15-2 sweep of the visiting MSOE Raiders. The wins pushed Rockford’s record to 21-9-1 overall and 13-3 in the Northern Athletics Conference.
Senior Travis Mohr (Bryant, Iowa/ Northeast) allowed two Raiders’ runs in the top of the first inning on three hits and a walk, but quickly regained his form, as only one other Raider managed to reach second base through the rest of the game. Mohr allowed just three hits in the game’s final seven innings in improving his record to 3-0 on the year.
Offensively, the Regents picked up where they left off in Saturday’s 10-9 win over Aurora. Seniors Kyle Standridge (Carol Stream, Ill./ Glenbard North) and Tyler Clay (Sammamish, Wash./ Eastlake) open the game with hits, subsequently tying the game after the first inning on RBI’s by Clay and fellow senior TJ Stanfield (Mokena, Ill./ Joliet JC). The offense continued in the third inning when sophomore Jimmy Dercks’ (Kaukauna, Wis./ Kaukauna) triple scored Eric Nicholson (Stillman Valley, Ill./ Stillman Valley) and Stanfield. Mike Catalano (Chicago, Ill./ Notre Dame) then knocked in Dercks with a sacrifice fly. Three consecutive walks followed by three consecutive hits, including a three RBI triple by Jimmy Polster (Spring Valley, Ill./ St. Bede) extended Rockford’s lead to 10-2 after seven innings. Catalano ended the game in the eighth inning with a two RBI double.
Offensively, game two was very similar to game one. The Regents plated three runs in the top of the first and second innings to take a commanding 6-0 lead after two innings. After extending their lead to 8-0 after four, the Raiders scored two runs before the Regents’ bats really woke up. Eleven Regents stepped to the plat in the bottom of the eighth inning recording eight hits. Five players recorded RBI’s in the frame leading to seven runs, pushing Rockford’s lead to 15-2. Nicholson led the Regents with four hits, while freshman Nate Asbury (Sterling, Ill./ Sterling) added three. Standridge extended his NCAA Division III leading hit streak to 31 games as he and Dercks recorded three RBI’s each.
Junior Will Kuchelmeister (Kaukauna, Wis./ Kaukauna) improved his record to 3-0 on the year with a complete game six hitter, allowing just one earned run.
The Regents will travel to Alexian Stadium in Schaumburg, Ill. on Saturday to face the Dominican University Stars in a NAC doubleheader. On Sunday, the Regents will welcome the Concordia University Cougars to Road Ranger Stadium for a 3:00 p.m. double dip.
