AURORA, Ill. – The Rockford College baseball team won a pair of games on Saturday that could go along way to determining the regular season champion of the Northern Athletic Conference. The Regents swept the Aurora University Spartans by scores of 2-1 and 10-9 on Saturday. Both teams came into the weekend series with identical NAC records of 9-3.
Game one was a classic pitcher’s duel, featuring two seniors each pitching complete games. Rockford’s Matt Bates (Brisbane, AU/ St. Thomas More) stymied the Spartans offense to the tune of five hits and one run over nine innings while recording seven strike outs. Offensively, the Regents only managed eight hits but two of them drove in runs. Rockford opened the scoring with one out in the sixth inning when senior TJ Stanfield’s (Mokena, Ill./ Joliet JC) single plated fellow senior Tyler Clay (Sammamish, Wash./ Eastlake).
Aurora tied the game in the bottom of the frame but Rockford immediately responded. Freshman catcher Kyle LaMore (Bourbonnais, Ill./ Bradley) opened the inning with a single before advancing to second on a SAC bunt by junior Jimmy Polster (Spring Valley, Ill./ St. Bede). Senior Kyle Standridge (Carol Stream, Ill./ Glenbard North) extended his hit streak to 28 games with his only hit of the game, an RBI single scoring the game-winning run. Bates returned to the mound with the lead and held the Spartans hitless over the game’s final three innings.
Both offenses came alive in the day’s second game, combining for 27 hits. Standridge paced the Regents offense with three hits and four runs scored. Clay, Standfield, and sophomore Jimmy Dercks (Kaukauna, Wis./ Kaukauna) recorded two hits each. Clay also knocked in two runs. As did senior Eric Nicholson (Stillman Valley, Ill./ Stillman Valley) returned from injury to notch two RBI’s, including the game-winner in the eighth inning. Kevin Patterson (Rockford, Ill./ Lincoln-Way Central) recorded his fifth win of the season.
Rockford will host MSOE in a NAC doubleheader on Wednesday at Road Ranger Stadium at 3:00 p.m.
