AURORA, Ill. – For the second time in three years, the Rockford College men’s team went on the road and defeated the Aurora University Spartans. This time, a 5-4 victory.
Rockford jumped out to a commanding lead after winning all three doubles matches. Mike Urbelis (Rockford, Ill./ Boylan) and Matt Saelens (Poplar Grove, ill./ Belvidere) won #1 doubles 8-5. Chris Wilwers (Marengo, Ill./ Marengo) and Steven Kadamian (Rockton, Ill./ Hononegah) won #2 doubles 8-5 and Samuel Medina-Conchi (Milwaukee, Wis./ Ronald W. Regan) and Matt Zawadzki (Poplar Grove, Ill./ Belvidere North) won #3 doubles 8-5.
Heading into singles competition, Rockford needed to win just two of the six individual matches to solidify the win. That is just what they did. Salaens won #2 singles 6-4, 6-3 and Urbelis won #3 6-4, 6-1. Medina-Conchi narrowly lost his match 7-4 in a third set tie-breaker.
The win improved Rockford’s record to 2-5 on the season. The Regents will host two matches on Saturday, as Lakeland College visits the Barnes Tennis Courts at 10:00 a.m. and the Marian University Sabers at 2:00 p.m.
