ROCKFORD, Ill. – After defeating Aurora University for the first time since 2003, the Rockford College softball team struggled in losing their next five games to the top three teams in the Northern Athletics Conference. Rockford broke that streak with a dramatic 10-9 win over t he visiting Wisconsin Lutheran College Warriors.
The Regents got the offense going early, as their first five batters reached base safely en route to four runs. Rockford plated another four runs in the bottom of the fourth inning on the strength of their defensive battery. Senior catcher Jackie Vensel (Belvidere, Ill./ Belvidere) and senior pitcher Aletha Cunningham (Byron, Ill./ Lincoln JC) each recorded two RBI singles to give Rockford a 9-3 lead after four innings.
The Warriors responded with six runs of their own in the top of the fifth to tie the game at 9-9. Cunningham shut to door on the Warriors in the sixth and seventh innings, giving the Regents a chance to win in the bottom of the seventh inning. Singles by Cunningham and freshman first baseman Nicole Lawler (Pearl City, Ill./ Pearl City) and a walk to senior outfielder Andrea Hundertmark (Freeport, Ill./ Forreston) loaded the bases with no outs and brought junior Biz Janusick (Spring Valley, Ill./ Illinois Valley CC) to the plate. Janusick never got a chance to make the play as Cunningham scored the game winning run on a wild pitch.
Vensel finished the game 3-3 with two RBI's and three runs scored, while Cunningham recorded two hits and three RBI's. Kristi Durlak (Lake Villa, Ill./ Grant Community), Katy Atkerson (Serena, Ill./ Serena), and Lalwer also recorded two hits each.
Rockford went on to lose the second game 11-3, committing six errors leading to six unearned runs.
The Regents will return to the field on Sunday, when they travel to Milwaukee, Wis. to face the MSOE Raiders in a NAC doubleheader beginning at 12:00 Noon.
