LOVES PARK, Ill. – Tuesday’s Rockford College baseball win used pitching and creativity to pull out a win. On Thursday, the Regents went back to their power game in defeating Marian University 20-10 in seven innings at Road Ranger Stadium.
Trailing 5-1 in the bottom of the third innings, the game began to turn. With one out in the bottom of the third inning, the Regents loaded the bases and senior Mike Catalano (Chicago, Ill./ Notre Dame) quickly cleared them with a grand slam that bounced off the Road Ranger Stadium video board, giving the Regents a 6-5 lead after three innings.
The bottom of the fourth inning was more of the same for Rockford. The Regents tallied six more runs in the fourth of RBI doubles by seniors Kyle Standridge (Carol Stream, Ill./ Glenbard North) and Tyler Clay (Sammamish, Wash./ Eastlake) and a three-run homer to right field by sophomore Curt Daughenbaugh (Dakota, Ill./ Dakota).
After allowing three unearned runs in the top of the fifth inning, Daughenbaugh capped another Rockford scoring inning, this time with a two-run home run to right, punctuating another five run inning. Clay ended the game with a two-run single in the bottom of the seventh.
All nine Regents batters recorded at least one hit and run scored, while six recorded at least one RBI. Standridge extended his hit streak to 20 with his 5-6 performance. Daughenbaugh finished the game going 3-5, with six RBI’s and three runs scored. Clay and Catalano also finished with four RBI’s and three runs scored each.
Junior Ben Korth (Freeport, Ill./ Orangeville) nabbed his second win of the year after going four innings in relief and not allowing an earned run while striking out three.
Rockford will hit the road on Friday to face Maranatha Baptist Bible College in Watertown, Wis. at 3:00 p.m. They will return to Road Ranger Stadium on Saturday when they host Lakeland College at 12:00 p.m.
