ROCKFORD, Ill. – Though the record does not reflect the effort on the field, the Rockford College softball team has made tremendous strides since returning from a winless spring trip to Florida. After picking up their first two wins of the season in dominant fashion nearly two weeks ago. Several recent results show the Regents moving in the right direction.
Last week, Rockford lost a seventh inning heartbreaker to Dominican University, a team that blanked Rockford 16-0 in their two meetings last year. On Sunday, Rockford lost two tough games to NAC power Lakeland College, including a 3-1 loss which Rockford trailed after five innings.
Perhaps the most impressive of the recent results was Saturday’s 7-5 win over previously unbeaten in conference Aurora University. Rockford’s last win over Aurora was May 2, 2003. The win broke a string of 18 consecutive losses, the last six in Northern athletics Conference play. Rockford used a balanced attack, in which seven player recorded at least one hit, led by pitcher Aletha Cunningham’s (Byron, Ill./ Lincoln JC) who went 4-4, including a triple and home run, two RBI’s and two runs scored. Last week’s conference student-athlete of the week, senior Andrea Hundertmark (Freeport, Ill./ Forreston) also went 2-2 with an RBI and run scored.
Rockford returns to action on Tuesday with a visit from the Benedictine University Eagles, who are currently undefeated in NAC play. First pitch is scheduled for 3:00 p.m. at the Smith Athletic Field.
