ROCKFORD — "Take Back the Night,” a march to bring awareness of sexual assault and other violence against women, will be held today at Rockford College.

The event is part of an international movement, with marches taking place across the globe.

Information booths and exhibits will open at 3:30 p.m. in the college’s Burpee Center Grace Roper Lounge. The march will start at 5 p.m. and wind through campus, ending where it starts.

Along the route, marchers will stop at various points to hear speakers talk about women’s issues. The event concludes with a candlelight remembrance in the Grace Roper Lounge to remember victims of sexual assault and violence.

"Sexual assault and violence against women are known as ‘silent crimes’ because they are not always reported,” said Jenifer Swanson, one of the organizers of the event. "The more we talk about it, the more awareness we bring of the problem."

Last year, "Take Back the Night” drew more than 40 marchers. Organizers are hoping to have 60 this year.
