From press release

Davar Ardalan, author of My Name is Iran: A Memoir, will speak at Rockford College at 4 p.m., March 29, in the college’s Maddox Theater.

In her book, Ardalan describes what it was like to grow up in revolutionary Iran. She is now a senior producer of Weekend Edition on National Public Radio, heard locally on WNIJ, Northern Public Radio 89.5.

Ardalan’s given name, Iran, inspired the 2004 NPR/American Radioworks series, My Name is Iran. In the stories, she explored the country for which she was named, tracing her Iranian heritage and her own experiences after the 1979 Islamic revolution. The struggle of a nation as reflected in her family’s story led to a memoir published by Henry Holt in January 2007.

As supervisory producer at NPR News in Washington, D.C., Ardalan has produced hundreds of stories from profiles of Iraqi President Jalal Talabani and actor and philanthropist Paul Newman to music features on legend Herbie Hancock and guitarmaker Paul Reed Smith to a cooking segment with culinary wizard Alton Brown.

In her role with Morning Edition, Ardalan helped make many of the creative decisions that shaped the daily broadcast, one of the most widely heard radio news magazines in the U.S. Some of those decisions were made in an instant, during a live broadcast while other decisions required elaborate coordination and planning—such as shaping Morning Edition broadcasts from Baghdad, Kabul and New Orleans.

The talk, part of the college’s Forum Series, is free and open to the public, though tickets are required. For more, call the Rockford College box office at (815) 226-4100. To see the entire Forum Series line-up, go to www.rockford.edu/?page=ForumSeries.
