Who is she? Juliana Barker, 36, is an athletic administrative assistant and cheerleading coach at Rockford College. She lives in Rockford with her husband, Shawn; daughter, Jordan; son, Jackson; and dog, Mocha.
Do you belong to any clubs or groups? Blackhawk Area Council-Cub Scout Pack 559 and Boy Scout Troop 41.
What inspires you? We get a great bunch of students on campus each year, and they are fun to get to know. It is great to see the students grow into young adults and see them venture out into the world.
What is up next for you? I am working on completing my MAT this spring at Rockford College. I will then be working toward an MBA and completing the teacher certification process in physical education and biology.
Tell us about your job: It’s great to be part of the Regents Athletics programs, win or lose. I do not directly have an effect on the outcome of the games, but I get to affect part of their collegiate sports experience. I take care of all their travel needs, make sure they get a comfortable bed to sleep in when they are on the road and that they get home safely. Another great reward is to go watch the games of the students who have progressed to the professional level. The biggest challenge is the hectic pace of keeping track of 17 varsity and two JV teams from the business side of team operations. The local spring weather can cause quite a havoc on team’s schedules, so a lot of rescheduling occurs.
Something surprising about you: I used to sell seashells on the seashore. One of my college jobs was at the Coral Reef on Clearwater Beach, Fla., selling knickknacks to tourists and enjoying the ocean view.
Best piece of advice: Never give up on your goals. It took me eight attempts, five colleges, three majors and 17 years to get my bachelor’s degree completed.
Ideal vacation: A 14-day Alaskan cruise/train trip. I would love to see a moose in its natural habitat and get to see the whales and glaciers.
Who are your heroes? My parents, Dennis and Cindy Russell. I truly value what they instilled in me and taught me over the years. My stepmother, Cindy, had a high school education but worked her way up to regional VP of a staffing agency, maintained a household, raised three kids and would still put a gourmet meal on the table each night. She is a definition of a "Super Mom.”
What food can you not live without? 2% milk. I could drink gallons of it a week if our grocery budget could support it.
Favorite place to go in the Rock River Valley: Riverview Ice House. I pretty much grew up in that building, being a figure skater. As an adult, I have spent a lot of time there with the Junior IceHogs as a coach and as a parent. I also love going out to Rock Cut State Park and enjoying the outdoors.
What does the Rock River Valley need? A Chick-Fil-A. I would be their No. 1 customer. A Jamba Juice for my daughter. I would love for Rockford College to have collegiate ice hockey programs.
