MILWAUKEE, Wis. – For about 35 minutes, it looked as though the Rockford College women’s basketball team would avenge last year’s postseason loss and spring the upset at Wisconsin Lutheran College. Unfortunately for the Regents, the game is 40 minutes long and WLC used the final five minutes to pull away. Ultimately, Rockford fell to WLC 52-37 in the opening round of the Northern Athletics Conference tournament.
Though Rockford lost 71-56 at WLC earlier in the season, Rockford stayed tough in this one. Both teams played an even first half, WLC leading 23-22 at the break. The first part of the second stanza was much like the first. Neither team could completely catch the game’s momentum. With 7:35 to play, Rockford trailed by just one point at 36-35. From that point, the Regents lost their offensive flow, as WLC went on a 16-2 run to end the game. Rockford’s only basket during that span was a Kaitlyn Sullivan (Lockport, Ill./ Lockport) jumper with 68 seconds to play. By then, Rockford was already down 15 points.
Juniors Megan Lawler (Pearl City, Ill./ Pearl City) and Melissa Swaziek (Loves Park, Ill./ Harlem) led Rockford with nine points each. Lawler and sophomore Britney Curry (Merrillville, Ind./ Merrillville) grabbed nine rebounds each for Rockford.
