Rockford, Ill. – As the Rockford College baseball team prepares to open their season, the Northern Athletics Conference baseball coaches have put a bull’s eye on the Regents back. On Friday, the NAC coaches picked Rockford as the 2010 preseason favorite to win the conference, garnering 131 poll points and five first place votes.

"I think it’s a great honor for our program and our players,” said Rockford’s fourth-year head coach Bob Koopmann. "It’s definitely a testament to what our alumni have established and the hard work of our current players. But with that said, it’s a long season and the NAC has some very good teams. So we are looking forward to some really exciting baseball over the next few months.”
Rockford finished last year with a 27-14 (17-5 NAC) and a second round exit in the NAC postseason tournament. Gone from last year’s club are some of the most successful players in the program’s 47 year history. Gone are four seniors who combined to hit .358 last season, with 147 runs scored and 152 runs batted in and two who went 5-3 with a 3.90 earned run average.

But the Regents cupboard is far from bare. Returning are 23 letterwinners who played a significant role on last year’s team, including 2009 NAC Freshman of the Year Jimmy Dercks (Kaukauna, Wis./ Kaukauna), first team All-NAC pitcher Travis Mohr (Bryant, Iowa/ Northeast), and All-NAC Honorable Mention performer Tyler Clay (Sammamish, Wash./ Eastlake).
Rockford will open their season on March 5, 2010 with a date against St. John’s (Minn.) College at the RussMatt Greater Phoenix Invitational in Phoenix, Arizona.
