ROCKFORD, Ill. – The Rockford College men’s basketball continued their solid play of late with a 76-68 home win over the Lakeland College Muskies, Rockford’s fourth win in their last five games. Led by the efforts of their six seniors playing in their final home game, Rockford’s inside dominance and defense were keys to the win.
The Muskies grabbed the early advantage, leading through the game’s first 15 minutes, then the Regents came out to play. Consecutive three pointers by junior reserve Tyler Nauman (Hinckley, Ill./ Hinckley-Big Rock) and lay-ups by seniors Andrew Weber (Roscoe, Ill./ Boylan) and Garrett Staniec (Glenview, Ill./ Glenbrook South) gave Rockford their first lead of the game, and subsequently the game’s momentum, leading to a 39-34 halftime advantage.
The Regents came out of the locker room for the second half rested and ready to run. Rockford’s 53.8% shooting and solid defense aided in extending their lead. A 23-7 run midway through the half, punctuated by a thunderous one-handed dunk by junior Robert Malone (Stephens, Ark./ Stephens) pushed the lead to a game-high 21 points with 4:24 to play.
Senior Danny Armelin (Gonzales, Texas/ Gonzales) paced the Regents with 24 points on 7-11 shooting from the field and 7-8 from the charity stripe. Weber added 11 points and five steals. Staniec grabbed a game-high nine rebounds for the Regents.
Rockford’s next game will be the Northern Athletics Conference Challenge Game on Saturday, February 20 at a time and location to be determined.
