ROCKFORD, Ill. – The Rockford College women’s basketball team dropped their sixth consecutive game, a 70-60 home defeat at the hands of Maranatha Baptist Bible College on Tuesday night. It was the first time the Regents fell to the Crusaders in the three-plus years of Northern Athletics Conference play.
The Regents controlled the game from the opening tip with a solid first half. Rockford established an inside dominance and scored 12 second chance points to Maranatha’s two. On the strength of 19 points from juniors Megan Lawler (Pearl City, Ill./ Pearl City) and Melissa Swaziek (Loves Park, Ill./ Harlem), Rockford went into the half with a 30-22 lead.
For much of the second half, it looked like the Regents would win going away, especially after pushing their lead to a game-high 12 points with 12 minutes to play. The Crusaders immediately responded with 11-0 run. Rockford responded with six consecutive points of their own, but it was the last time the momentum would be in Rockford’s corner. Over the next five minutes, the Crusader’s went on a 19-6 run, taking a 62-56 lead with just over one minute on the clock.
Lawler led three Regents in double figure scoring with 18 points. Sophomore Britney Curry (Merrillville, Ind./ Merrillville) finished with 16, and Swaziek added 12.
Rockford will travel to Fond du Lac, Wis. on Wednesday to face the Marina University Sabers at 7:00 p.m.
