Angel Escobedo and Andrew Howe continue to deliver a 1-1 punch on the mats this winter.
The Indiana senior and Wisconsin sophomore are offering the Region a 2-for-1 deal atop the national rankings. Escobedo, a Griffith grad, is rated the No. 1 collegiate wrestler at 125 pounds by InterMat.com after running his season record to 25-0 with a 22-6 major decision in the Hoosiers' 22-13 team triumph over Illinois last Friday.

Hanover Central alumnus Howe, ranked first at 165 pounds by InterMat.com, improved to 23-0 on the year with victories against opponents from Penn State (7-2) and Minnesota (15-5) last Friday and Sunday, respectively. The Badgers, however, suffered team defeats in both instances.
Sophomore B.J. Futrell (Mt. Carmel) has posted a 6-1 record at 125 pounds while competing for Illinois. Four of Futrell's victories have been earned via pinfall, with the fastest coming in just 1:12.
Another Mt. Carmel alumnus, Zeke Rowan, is on the Illini roster as a 133-pounder.

Football
St. Francis junior center Brendan Carragher (Andrean) was chosen as an honorable mention on the College Fanz NAIA All-America squad. The Cougars' third-year starter had previously gotten named to the NAIA Scholar-Athlete and All-Mid-States Football Association Mideast League teams.

Women's basketball
In her two strongest outings since suffering a broken nose and being forced to wear a protective mask, St. Xavier senior guard Kathlyn McClain (Marian Catholic) helped the NAIA Division I third-ranked Cougars (22-1) notch wins over Robert Morris (91-69) and Trinity Christian (72-52).
McClain burned the Eagles for 27 points, nine assists and five steals, then contributed 16 points and game-high six steals in St. Xavier's victory over the Trolls. Junior guard Alex Barone (Marian Catholic) added 16 points versus Robert Morris.

Sophomore Britney Curry (Merrillville) totaled 17 points and four assists for Rockford College in its 76-60 loss to Benedictine. That effort followed her 20-point, six-rebound outing that propelled Rockford to a 61-56 victory over Aurora.

Track and field
Austin Werner (Illiana Christian) opened his sophomore season at Trinity Christian by establishing a school record. The Dyer resident clocked an 8:51.25 for 3,000 meters at the Tadd Metzger Invitational in Kenosha, a time that removed another former Viking, Andy Jellema, from the top position in that running event.

Junior Jon Biancardi (Highland) won both as an individual and relay team member as North Central College captured its own triangular last Friday. Biancardi took first in the 800 run in 1:58.85, then joined three other Cardinals to set the pace in the 1,600 relay (3:28.13).

Swimming
Senior Donna Smailis (Highland) posted two first-place finishes and a pair of seconds as Indiana defeated No. 13-ranked Louisville 161-139. Smailis' time of 50.60 in the 100-yard freestyle was the third-fastest registered by a Hoosiers swimmer this season, and she was also a member of Indiana's victorious 400 free relay unit (3:23.15).

Smailis was runner-up in the 100 backstroke (55.54) and as part of the 200 medley relay quartet (1:43.22).

Junior Bryan Chovanec (Munster) gave the Hoosiers' men's team a second place in the 50 free (20.72) and helped it take third in the 200 medley relay (1:33.01), but that didn't prevent Louisville from securing a 179-121 team triumph.
