ROCKFORD (WREX) - Rockford College's nursing program goes through an expansion. The school is doubling the number of nursing students from 40 to 80.
Until now, the program only admitted students in the spring semester. Nursing courses were offered one time a year. Now, the college will add a second admission point in the fall.
Nursing Department Chair, Julie Luetschwager, says all the changes are to help ease the critical shortage of nurses in the area.
"Nursing is not just about bedside care. It's also about caring for individuals in the community, educating people, occupation health," says Luetschwager.
The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics estimates the nursing field will grow 23% in the next six years.
