Freeport, Ill.
— Freeport grad McKenzie Jacobs has established herself as one of the top swimmers in the Horizon League.

Jacobs, a member of the Illinois-Chicago team, won two events in a dual meet with Valparaiso recently. Her time of 17:49.97 in the 1,650-yard freestyle ranks fifth on the conference leaderboard. She also won the 200-yard freestyle in the dual meet, touching the wall at 1:59.69. Jacobs is also ranked in the top 10 among Horizon League swimmers in the 1,000-yard freestyle, clocking in at 10:43.03.
The women defeated Valparaiso, scoring 143 points to Valpo’s 76.

In the men’s dual meet between UIC and Valpo, Freeport grad Rahul Singh, a senior with Illinois-Chicago, finished fifth in the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 23.67 seconds. The UIC men were equally successful, beating Valparaiso 159-69.

Former Freeport basketball player Katie Norman, scored a career-high 11 points for Southeast Missouri State in a 52-47 win over Jacksonville State. Norman, who hit 5-of-10 field goal attempts, also had three rebounds and two assists. She hit one three-pointer. SEMO also lost a 59-56 battle to Tennessee Tech last week. Norman scored seven points, five rebounds, three assists and two steals in that contest. SEMO is 8-12 overall and 4-7 in the Ohio Valley Conference.

The Rockford College women’s basketball team had a pair of double-digit performances from Pearl City grads Megan Lawler and Nicole Lawler, but it was not enough in a 76-60 loss to Benedictine. Megan Lawler finished with 15 points, five rebounds, two assists and two steals. Megan Lawler drained 4-of-5 shots from the field and 7-of-8 from the charity stripe. Nicole Lawler, who hit 2-of-6 shots from the field and 6-of-8 from the stripe, finished with 10 points, two rebounds and two blocked shots. Rockford is 6-13 overall and 5-7 in the Northern Athletics Conference.

The Butler men’s basketball team defeated Wisconsin-Green Bay (75-57) and Wisconsin-Milwaukee (73-66) this week. Former Freeport basketball player Willie Veasley, a senior, finished with 13 points and eight rebounds against UWGB. Veasley started the game and played 34 minutes. He hit 5-of-7 shots from the field, including two three-pointers, and made 1-of-3 free throws. In with win over Wisconsin-Milwaukee, Veasley finished with nine points, eight rebounds and two steals. Butler is 18-4 overall and 11-0 in the Horizon League. Butler has won 10 consecutive games.

Dakota grad Brittany Houghton, a senior with the Northern Illinois track team, finished ninth in the 400-meter dash at the Carle/Health Alliance Classic, which was hosted by the University of Illinois at the Illini Armory. Houghton finished the race in 1:00.91. She was also a member of the Huskie 1,600-meter relay team, which finished seventh in 4:03.41. Northern Illinois took ninth with 21.5 points. The Illini won the meet with 154 points.

Augustana’s Chris Anderson, a West Carroll grad, scored seven points in a 62-49 win over Elmhurst. Anderson played 16 minutes in the contest. The Vikings have won three of their past four contest and boast a 12-7 overall mark. They are 5-3 in the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin.
Freeport grad Jackie Barton, a junior with the Western Illinois basketball team, scored five points in each of two losses this week. In a 54-46 loss to Missouri-Kansas City, Barton also had eight rebounds. She had eight rebounds and two assists in a 52-36 loss to Oakland. Western Illinois is 6-15 overall and 2-8 in the Summit League.

The Western Illinois men’s and women’s swim teams both took second in dual meets with the Wisconsin-Milwaukee.

For the men, Freeport grad Mike Regan scored points in two individual events. The Western Illinois junior was fourth in the 50-yard freestyle (23.02) and fifth in the 200-yard backstroke (2:03.93). Mike Regan also was a member of the fifth place 200-yard freestyle relay, which finished in 1:32.71. The men lost a 181-49 decision to Wisconsin-Milwaukee.

In the women’s meet, Freeport grad Katie Regan, a freshman, finished third in the 200-yard butterfly (2:17.90) and fifth in the 200-yard freestyle (2:07.40). Regan was also a member of the 200-yard freestyle relay team, which touched the wall at 1:43.02 for a second-place finish. The Western Illinois women lost to UW-Milwaukee 176-61.
