Freeport, Ill. — On Saturday, Vinny Alber and Jesse Milks, a pair of Dakota grads, ended a three-day wrestling odyssey that included five matches — and five victories — for each.
"(Alber and Milks) anchor the middle of our lineup,” Wisconsin-Platteville head coach Chris Walter said. "Jesse had been injured for a bit, and we are happy to have him back. Vinny has been a warrior for us. He is a great competitor. He goes out there and guts it out and tries to win every match that he is in. He gives us 100 percent at the 165-pound weight class.”
First, Wisconsin-Platteville defeated Wisconsin-Eau Claire 48-6. Milks, who wrestles at 157 pounds, defeated Jon Ames by pinfall at the 1:33 mark. Alber defeated Wisconsin-Platteville’s Levi Polus by a 16-1 score, which is a technical fall.
In the Monon Bells Duals, hosted by Wabash College, Wisconsin-Platteville defeated Muskingum College (39-9), Muskegon College (29-12) and Ohio Northern (34-13). Wisconsin-Platteville lost a 19-18 decision to Wabash College. Alber pinned Muskegon’s Jacob Blackmer (6:41), ONU’s Billy Painter (2:06) and Wabash’s Graham Youngs (2:23). He also defeated Adam Harris, a Muskingum grappler, by a 9-7 decision.
Milks defeated Muskingum’s Ralph Geesey and ONU’s Jeff Sommers by pinfall, at 2:33 and 1:37, respectively. Milks also dumped Muskegon’s Korey Keehbauch (15-5) and Wabash’s Jake Moore (10-1).
Alber, a sophomore, is 20-1, while Milks, a senior, has a 13-1 mark. Alber has won 10 matches by pinfall, while Milks has pinned five opponents.
Forreston grad Lani Kasten scored a team-high 20 points in the Augustana basketball team’s 62-58 loss to North Central. She made 9-of-12 field goal attempts and 2-of-2 free throws. She also had three rebounds in the contest. Kasten recorded 11 points, five rebounds, four assists and three blocked shots in Augustana’s 68-63 loss to Millikin. In that game, Kasten made 5-of-10 shots from the field and 1-of-1 from the charity stripe. Augustana is 6-11 overall and 1-5 in the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin.
Rockford College’s Megan Lawler and Nicole Lawler, a pair of Pearl City grads, had their best game of the week in a 76-58 loss to Edgewood. Megan Lawler, a senior, scored 16 points by hitting 6-of-7 field goal attempts and 4-of-6 free throws. She also had eight rebounds and two steals. Nicloe Lawler had four points, four rebounds and four assists. Rockford is 6-11 overall and 5-5 in the Northern Athletics Conference.
Former Dakota athlete Christine Nelson, a sophomore with the Carthage track team, finished second in the pentathlon at the Private College Invitational hosted by Carthage. Nelson finished with 2,802 points. The winner, teammate Sarah Thompson, finished with 2,855 points. As a team, Carthage finished second with 137.5 points. North Central won the meet with 182.50.
Southeast Missouri State basketball player Katie Norman saw action in both of her team’s games this week. In a 90-72 loss to Murray State, the freshman bucketed nine points, pulled down seven rebounds, doled out three assists and had three steals. In the 49-46 loss to Tennessee-Martin, the Freeport grad finished with eight points, five rebounds, two assists and two blocked shots. SEMO is 6-12 overall and 3-6 in the Ohio Valley Conference.
Polo grad Terah Cheatham, a senior with the DePaul track team, placed fourth in the 3,000-meter run at the Notre Dame Opener. Cheatham finished the race in 10 minutes, 12.32 seconds. She was also a member of a DePaul 1,600-meter relay team that took fifth in 4:03.07. Team scores were not kept.
Western Illinois basketball player Jackie Barton, a Freeport grad, scored six points and pulled down four caroms in Western’s 63-47 win over Centenary. The junior also had two points and seven rebounds in in 34 minutes of play. Western Illinois is 6-12 overall and 2-5 in the Summit League.
Rachel Brubaker, a Durand grad who is a senior with the Bradley track team, finished ninth in the 1,000-meter run at the Northern Iowa Panther Open. Brubaker crossed the finish line in 3:15.62. Team scores were not kept.
West Carroll grad Chris Anderson scored three points as the Augustana basketball team defeated North Central 71-61. Anderson had two points in 12 minutes of play in Augustana’s 63-48 win over Millikin. Augustana is 11-6 overall and 4-2 in the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin.
