ROCKFORD (WREX) - The leader of a media watchdog group visits Rockford College to encourage more students to become independent journalists.
Peter Phillips helped write the book Censored: Media Democracy in Action. The book is published each year and contains the top 25 stories of the year that don't show up in the news. Phillips says part of the problem is that there aren't enough journalists to find the stories.
"We can listen to each other and the Internet gives us that opportunity, cable access television gives us that opportunity. So it's not just corporate media's fault, we have to be engaged in telling our own stories, doing our own research, and I think that colleges and universities have a big role to play in that," Phillips said.
