Dozens of representatives from social service agencies in the Rock River Valley gathered Thursday in the Burpee Center at Rockford College as part of a statewide campaign on raising awareness of how the state’s budget crisis is compromising human services.

As many as 2 million residents, or 16 percent of Illinoisans, depend on the state for child care, after-school programs, counseling for victims of sexual and domestic abuse, and help finding jobs. Moreover, 400,000 people are employed in the human services sector.

But Illinois can’t pay its bills and "human services have been cut to the bone,” said Nancy Ronquillo, chairwoman for Illinois Partners for Human Service and CEO/president for Children + Family Aid, a major social service provider in Illinois.
