ROCKFORD, Ill. – After three consecutive disappointing losses, the Rockford College men’s basketball team got back in the win column with a 63-53 victory over Marian University at the Seaver Center. The Regents got back to the basics of solid defense, rebounding, and ball movement to improve their record to 8-7 (3-5 NAC).
After the Sabers scored the game’s opening bucket, Rockford took control of the game, scoring nine consecutive points either in the paint or from the free throw lane. Rockford used that interior dominance to establish a 34-22 halftime lead. The Regents went into the break with a 30-2 advantage in points in the paint, a 10-2 advantage in second chance points, and a 27-12 rebound advantage, all while holding Marian to just 29.2% shooting. Senior Leon Alford (Chicago, Ill./ St. Laurence) and Randon Williams (Chicago, Ill./ Westinghouse) paced the Regents’ offense with 12 and 10 first half points, respectively, while Williams and fellow senior Garrett Staniec (Glenview, Ill./ Glenbrook South) each grabbed seven boards.
The second half was more of the same, as the Regents went on a 15-4 run to open the half, extending their lead to a game-high 23 points.
Alford led the Regents with 18 points, while Williams added 12 points and 10 boards. Senior Andrew Weber (Roscoe, Ill./ Boylan) paced Rockford with 8 points, 5 rebounds, 7 assists, and 4 steals. Senior DeAndre Steward (Lombard, Ill./ Proviso West) tallied 8 points off the bench. Rockford maintained a 48-32 edge on the boards and held Marian to 32.8% shooting for the game.
Rockford will hit the road on Thursday to face Lakeland College in Sheboygan, Wis. before returning home on Saturday to host the Aurora University Spartans.
