- Local leaders are pushing people to use the Martin Luther King Junior holiday as a day to learn, not a day to relax.

Schools and many businesses are closed today to honor the life of Marin Luther King Junior.

YouthBuild and Goodwill Industries of Northern Illinois have partnered for the MLK Jr. Day of Service events. Workshops celebrating King's life are available all day and will feature guest speakers: Mayor Larry Morrissey, State Representative Chuck Jefferson, US Representative Don Manzullo, Dr. LaVonne M. Sheffield, Excell Lewis III, and Victory Bell.

A group of students at Rockford College are using the day to do volunteer work.

There are several other MLK Jr. events going on today. You can see the complete list on the Community page of WREX.com by clicking the link along the left of this story.
